Walkabout 14 – Brisbane weekend

The weekend is over and it was a huge success – Al had a fab time chatting and socialising and I enjoyed myself as well, I have enough to say to those who were available for a chat not to feel too much of a stranger at the gathering. It was good to see Al in his element, being honoured and very much part of the ‘in-group’.

Thank you Graham and Lorraine for impeccable hospitality and a hot shower after the Boonah market which was as good as last time to our great surprise and gratitude. There was a comfortable bed at the Gardiners after the function as well, much appreciated. Then Alan and I did a bit of a random wander in Brissie, brunch in Wilston where the waitress charged us for three meals!!! Then a wander along the river, too beautiful, and so exciting for Bella. The pics in the link tell some of the story. Then on to dear Di and Geoff in Moorooka for some well-earned R and R and now here we are at Kilcoy having parted with arms and legs into the bank account of our mechanic who has done huge work on the brakes and springs of the van. It’s a bit of a cleft stick – we have to have the van in good order and we have to carry lots of weight because of the tools which are our main source of income. The two are looking a bit incompatible. We will install heavier springs which will make a huge difference he says, and Al will drive a bit differently thinking of the sort of wear and tear… as in less braking… more like a truck. All a learning curve – anyway we thought we would have to sleep in the caravan at the mechanic’s workshop tonight but he pulled out the stops to get it ready for us and here we are at Kilcoy. Trying to decide whether to go back to Toogoolawah to see if there is anything left over after the garage sale or not do it and satisfy ourselves with the dumps and charity shops… Time and tomorrow morning will tell.  (It is tomorrow morning and we have decided that we don’t really need the stock and certainly don’t have the spare money to spend on it.)

We are heading for Yandina for Saturday but Al hopes to get in the water before then. Hope it is not too cold for him. It has been freezing, so the power point in this sweet rest stop has been put to good use with the heater keeping me warm as I write. They have an honour box for us to deposit a small fee and even include hot showers.  Pretty good for a rest stop which usually only has toilets and sometimes drinking water.  But then those are free!

About retrocentricaussie

We are a pair of ageing 'gypsies' who find junk and sell antiques, especially objects from the art nouveau/art deco years and old and well-loved tools. We also occasionally buy antiques as well!! We haunt clearance sales, garage sales, charity shops and sometimes dumps. Lately we have even been to a 'proper' auction. The thrill is in the chase for good stuff at prices we can afford and still sell the items on at a profit sufficient to support us. We recycle what other people don't want anymore, we find new homes for nice things. We sell at markets and antique fairs, swap meets and wherever else we can find. Our clientele are mostly ordinary people who want something they can afford that will enhance their quality of life. We are especially pleased when generation Y buy from us. It suggests that appreciation of quality and good design is still part of our modern aesthetic.
