Looking forward

This business of embracing the future is not easy but is starting to happen to me.  Some very good things have happened that have turned the whole thing around.  The Faculty of Business and Law have awarded UPGRADE an award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  One of those odd things, because we are not actually attached to the Faculty, Kerrie McLaren – campus librarian and I who present the workshop will not be mentioned on the  award – I am told.  Doesn’t matter though, the glory still sticks and I feel so affirmed and acknowledged and can leave this job feeling as if I have been appreciated although management have ‘let me go’.  They will not make my contract ongoing although I have been told by previous management that they would.  No fault – just real sadness and disappointment… and feels good when these sentiments are echoed and expressed by others with whom I have come in contact at Springfield as well as Toowoomba.  So moving on  Alan and I have bought a caravan and will put our trade goods into the Sprinter and trade our way around Australia for as long as our funds hold out.

Current conversations are all about what sort of hot water system we need in the caravan and I have to find a porta potty, can’t see myself taking a spade, torch and toilet paper into the bush in the dark…  Don’t know why it didn’t feel the same sort of challenge in the Oman desert!?  We are imagining what it will be like to be on ‘walkabout on the wallaby’.  We plan not to drive for too long in any one day but we have to find ways to sell our stock to keep food on the table and fuel in the tank.  I will be doing lots of studying and moving on with the PhD and Alan will be seeing to stock and eBay perhaps or hopefully our own website which will have items for sale on it.  Unfortunately we might not get it going before we leave, it is all happening quite fast and we plan to vacate our house on 20th December and head south for Christmas with Angie and Kevin and stash all our stuff in storage in Grafton also my precious car which Al’s workmates call the Mafia staff car!!

I will write something every week or so about what we are doing and seeing – got to get the website up  and will tell about all the markets we attend, reviews of their shape and size and patronage all that… hopefully the organisers will even pay us to put their events on our website… this is a small taste of writing to come.  So this weekend is Ipswich Antique fair which I will do on my own then the following week is Nambour Collectorama and then Lismore – all starting to have that last one for a bit feeling.  Anyway looking forward to an interesting few months…

About retrocentricaussie

We are a pair of ageing 'gypsies' who find junk and sell antiques, especially objects from the art nouveau/art deco years and old and well-loved tools. We also occasionally buy antiques as well!! We haunt clearance sales, garage sales, charity shops and sometimes dumps. Lately we have even been to a 'proper' auction. The thrill is in the chase for good stuff at prices we can afford and still sell the items on at a profit sufficient to support us. We recycle what other people don't want anymore, we find new homes for nice things. We sell at markets and antique fairs, swap meets and wherever else we can find. Our clientele are mostly ordinary people who want something they can afford that will enhance their quality of life. We are especially pleased when generation Y buy from us. It suggests that appreciation of quality and good design is still part of our modern aesthetic.
