And then there was a garage sale

As I write this the rain is gently and persistently falling into the swimming pool and onto the gazebos at each end of the car port and of course onto the carport roof as well. Thank goodness Alan’s drainage work along the edge of the driveway was successful, the only water coming onto the concrete is falling between gazebo and roof. All the ‘stuff’ we are hoping to offload onto hopefully eager buyers for some profit at least, is arrayed on our tables down either side of the covered space. We have set it cheap enough and after all we have bought most of it at some stage so hopefully other people might also find it desirable.

Rain seems to be a bit of a theme in this trading blog – the weather is supposed to be less consistently wet tomorrow. We will see. And I will report the result. There may also be pictures.
This is tomorrow. It is all over, the gazebos are in their bags and the left over ‘stuff’ is in boxes in the Transit ready to be delivered at the auction or in the Kia ready to be dropped off at the op shop. Very little has been restored to storage. So in all it was a very successful exercise. We made as much or more than a usual take at any market or fair and we didn’t have to go there or pay for the site! In addition we were able to do other chores in the house in between customers. Indeed today, Sunday I have tackled a huge pile of ironing which I will finish when I have finished writing this.

We sold some furniture, all restorers’ dreams!! and the rest is in the auction consignment. The place feels wonderfully spacious and although Alan got very cranky at the end we feel good about jobs well done. Not only have we sold lots of redundant stock we have also sold the Kia. And I must say are feeling some sellers’ remorse/verdriet that South African word works in a way no other does, for me, at any rate. This is all in the cause of getting our finances under control. The Kia payments were a big chunk of money each month. Unfortunately we have to pay a bit of residual to the finance company. Anyway we will work that out too and for the first time in our lives will be sharing a car!! that is going to be interesting. We have such a generous relationship that sharing is not usually a problem for us but a car? Well that will be a challenge. I have so enjoyed driving a car that is a new model with elegance and power…

About retrocentricaussie

We are a pair of ageing 'gypsies' who find junk and sell antiques, especially objects from the art nouveau/art deco years and old and well-loved tools. We also occasionally buy antiques as well!! We haunt clearance sales, garage sales, charity shops and sometimes dumps. Lately we have even been to a 'proper' auction. The thrill is in the chase for good stuff at prices we can afford and still sell the items on at a profit sufficient to support us. We recycle what other people don't want anymore, we find new homes for nice things. We sell at markets and antique fairs, swap meets and wherever else we can find. Our clientele are mostly ordinary people who want something they can afford that will enhance their quality of life. We are especially pleased when generation Y buy from us. It suggests that appreciation of quality and good design is still part of our modern aesthetic.

Congrats on the garage sale! I loved your line about sharing a car. We too have a generous sharing relationship (and two paid for cars). Our “car’ issue is the dongle for the wireless internet connection. When Glen goes out of town, it is a tussle which of us will be able to be on-line!

    • Al’s reg – we don’t give up easily. And by th way we didn’t sell the car. Deal fell through and we don’t mind that much – just hope we can maintain the finance!!!
Hug the girls and each other from us.

Good to hear the selling is going well. You should give the Kia Motor Company the link to your blog…they may give you a car for free, as I don’t think they often get people publicly declaring that they are very attached to their Kia…:). Don’t you dare take me off your mailing list either.
